Pickleball 101

The basics.

01

The court

A pickleball court is 20 × 44 feet — the same size as a doubles badminton court — with a 7-foot non-volley zone (the 'kitchen') on each side of the net.

02

The serve

Serves are hit underhand, diagonally cross-court, and must land beyond the kitchen line.

03

Two-bounce rule

The ball must bounce once on each side before either team may volley.

04

Scoring

In traditional scoring, only the serving team scores, and games are typically played to 11, win by 2.

Playing techniques

Shots to know.

01

The dink

A soft shot into the opponent's kitchen.

02

Third-shot drop

A soft shot that lets your team move to the net.

03

The drive

A fast, low shot to pressure opponents.

04

The reset

Neutralizing a hard shot by softening it into the kitchen.

Pickleball history

Born in 1965.

Pickleball was invented on Bainbridge Island, Washington, in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum as a backyard game for their families. It has since grown into one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States.
